Dear
Student:
On
behalf of Trinity College Dublin, and the Washington-Ireland
Program Alumni Network, I would like to welcome you
to the inaugural Horizons Expo. We are delighted that
the very first Expo is taking place in Trinity.
The primary aim of the Expo is to
encourage students to participate fully in our society.
Today Ireland is one of the world’s most affluent
societies and it is easy for us to loose sight of
those marginalized: the homeless, those with intellectual
disabilities and those facing famine situations in
the developing world. The not-for-profit sector plays
an increasingly important role in ensuring that these
groups are represented and given the assistance they
need to improve their situation. Volunteer participation
is key. A great recent example in Ireland of the power
of volunteerism and civil society at work was the
outstanding success of the Special Olympics.
Here in Trinity College, I am constantly
struck by the energy of our students. Many are involved
in the vibrant clubs and societies that are an important
part of the fabric of the Trinity Experience for students.
Some societies are already working to fight the poverty
trap in which many people, both nationally and internationally,
find themselves. I applaud their efforts.
The Washington-Ireland Program builds
on the strong historical links that exist between
Ireland and the US. This program provides students
with opportunities to live in the US and to learn
about their culture, to understand the mechanics of
Government and how individuals can influence policies
for the betterment of society at large.
As Provost, I envisage a College where
all those who work and study in Trinity are encouraged
to achieve their full potential as individuals. Therefore,
I warmly welcome the Horizons Expo, as it presents
an opportunity to harness the efforts and skills of
talented young people for the common good.
Yours sincerely

John Hegarty,
Provost, Trinity College Dublin
